A4. The teacher develops and selects appropriate instructional goals and objectives.

With the help of my mentor teacher and my supervisor, I tried to craft the most appropriate and successful instructional goals and objectives within my lesson plans. By gauging how much the students digest in an average class time and what they understand, I attempted creating goals and objectives that made the most sense in connection to both the students and the lesson at hand. Below are screenshots of a few of the instructional goals and objectives I included in my lesson plans during my pre-service teaching experience:

The picture above shows the basic layout of the lesson plans I created; they all had the “Goal for the day”, “Long-term goal”, “Essential Question”, and “Objectives/Learning Goals”. This specific lesson plan for English class was about the impact the choices we make as humans can affect us. Therefore, the goal for the day was to help students review what they were initially taught by my fellow mentee in a different class period before I reiterated with the long-term goal just how much good and bad choices can affect individuals. Finally, the instructional goals and objectives were listed before the schedule for the day and described what students would learn during the day and how they would digest this information.

This screenshot is taken from a lesson plan for one of the Mythology classes I had the opportunity to teach under my mentor teacher. I wanted to make sure students understood why Greek mythology is important to learn today when the myths were created years and years ago. Therefore, I helped them understand this overall goal by having them relate to demigods (creatures who are half-god and half-human) such as Hercules.

For the most part, I can confidently say the objectives and instructional goals were met whenever I taught class. Of course, things such as losing track of time, having poor Wi-Fi signal, and other technological issues could get in the way of successfully reaching each goal and presenting it to the class, but I have learned that going through everything in a proficient manner and staying professional helps a lot. Students also did their best with cooperating and being patient if I did ever run into any problems with screensharing, accessing a link, or having clear audio on my laptop.
